Physical Comedy: Yay or Nay?

May 4, 2009

Is there room for physical comedy in the world of comedy snobbery? Or is it purely a realm of intellectual humor? Comedy of the mind over comedy of the body? I think Zach Galifianakis handled the issue best in the documentary “The Comedians of Comedy.”

Some physical comedy is atrocious and caters to the lowest common denominator, but I would sure rather watch Zach fall out of a chair over and over than listen to what passes for comedy on NPR most of the time.

Dick Van Dyke & Red Skelton were great physical comedians. So were the guys from Monty Python
Too many young comics take the easy way out.

Hey, I’m a big comedy fan. Indeed I make my living through it, and I can safely say that without strong physicality there is a huge gap missing in any comedians arsenal. I’m not saying everyone needs to be pratfalling, but even a stand up’s posture is important. He must fit his ‘look’ into what he’s saying, where he’s coming from, or directly play against it.
